Why Moxa Therapy Can Support Postpartum Recovery

The postpartum period is a deeply important time for recovery. Your body has worked hard through pregnancy and birth, and now it needs warmth, rest, and gentle support to heal. As a postpartum doula, I often see mothers navigating low back pain, tension, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm, all while caring for a newborn.

That’s why I offer moxa therapy as part of my postpartum bodywork. Moxa therapy is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that uses the gentle warmth of burning mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near specific points on the body. This warmth is known to support circulation, relax muscles, reduce inflammation, and restore balance; making it especially supportive in the postpartum period (Zhang et al., 2018; Li et al., 2019).

Here are five reasons I include moxa therapy in my postpartum care:

1. To Improve Blood Circulation and Support Healing

After birth, circulation can be sluggish, especially in the lower back and abdominal area. Research shows that moxa therapy increases local blood perfusion, supporting tissue healing and reducing postpartum bleeding (Zhang et al., 2018; Cui, 2021). Improved circulation helps the body recover more efficiently and gently eases inflammation that can contribute to pain.

2. To Ease Low Back Pain and Muscle Tension

Low back pain is one of the most common postpartum complaints and can make everyday movements feel challenging. Studies indicate that the warmth of moxa therapy helps relax tense muscles, reduce pain, and improve mobility, making it easier to move, rest, and care for your baby (Li et al., 2017; Zhang et al., 2018).

3. To Support Uterine Recovery After Birth

The uterus goes through a natural process of involution after birth, gradually returning to its pre-pregnancy size. Clinical studies show that moxa therapy can support this process by encouraging healthy uterine contractions, reducing lochia volume, and shortening recovery time (Wu et al., 2019; Gao, 2024). Many mothers experience a smoother, more supported recovery with this gentle warmth.

4. To Calm the Nervous System and Support Emotional Well-Being

Postpartum life can feel intense; physically, emotionally, and hormonally. Research suggests that moxa therapy has calming effects on the nervous system and may help reduce stress and symptoms of postpartum depression (Kim et al., 2020). In my work, I see how the warmth of moxa creates a sense of safety and deep relaxation, allowing the body and mind to soften.

5. To Gently Encourage Breast Milk Production

Breastfeeding can be affected by stress, fatigue, and hormonal shifts. Studies have shown that moxa therapy, when applied to specific acupuncture points, may support lactation, with some research reporting increased milk production compared to standard care (Chen et al., 2018). Supporting the mother’s body in this way also supports the baby.

Moxa therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of postpartum bodywork, offered as supportive care alongside rest, nourishment, and emotional support. It is never about pushing the body, but about warming, softening, and allowing recovery to unfold naturally.
