5 Reasons I Include Pregnancy Massage in My Prenatal Doula Care
As a doula, my role is to support you not only emotionally and practically, but also through your body. Pregnancy brings profound physical and nervous system changes, and many mothers experience tension, fatigue, swelling, disrupted sleep, or simply the need to feel deeply held and cared for.
That’s why pregnancy massage - rooted in the Ayurvedic tradition of Abhyanga - is part of my prenatal doula care. This gentle, rhythmic oil massage is adapted specifically for pregnancy and offered as a nurturing, supportive practice alongside emotional and educational support.
Here are five reasons I include pregnancy massage in my doula packages:
1. To Ease Physical Discomfort as Your Body Changes
As your baby grows, your posture, joints, and muscles adapt. Many mothers feel tension in the lower back, hips, shoulders, and neck. Research on Abhyanga shows that this type of massage supports muscle relaxation, circulation, and physical comfort, making it easier to move and rest during pregnancy.
In my work, I see how even gentle touch can help mothers feel more at ease in their changing bodies.
2. To Support Circulation and Reduce Swelling
Pregnancy naturally increases blood volume and fluid retention, which can lead to swelling in the legs, feet, and hands. Abhyanga-style massage has been shown to support healthy circulation and lymphatic flow, which may help reduce heaviness and discomfort.
During sessions, I adapt the massage to encourage gentle fluid movement and comfort, always respecting your body’s needs and stage of pregnancy.
3. To Calm the Nervous System and Reduce Stress
Pregnancy is not just physical—it’s deeply emotional. Massage in the Abhyanga tradition has been shown to have calming effects on the nervous system, helping lower stress and promote relaxation.
As a doula, I see how creating a sense of safety, warmth, and slowing down supports not only your well-being, but also your connection to your baby.
4. To Support Rest and Better Sleep
Many pregnant women struggle with sleep due to discomfort, hormonal changes, or a busy mind. Research suggests that rhythmic, nurturing massage can improve sleep quality and emotional balance.
I include pregnancy massage as a way to help your body soften, unwind, and find moments of deep rest—something that becomes increasingly valuable as birth approaches.
5. To Strengthen the Mind–Body Connection Before Birth
Pregnancy massage is not only about easing discomfort - it’s about presence and connection. Abhyanga is traditionally used to support awareness of the body and cultivate calm, grounded energy.
As part of my prenatal doula care, this massage offers space for you to tune into your body, your breath, and your baby - laying a foundation of trust and embodiment that can be deeply supportive for birth.
Pregnancy Massage as Part of Prenatal Doula Care
In my doula packages, pregnancy massage is offered as a supportive, non-medical bodywork practice, inspired by Abhyanga and adapted safely for pregnancy. It complements emotional support, birth preparation, and practical guidance - because caring for the body and nervous system is an essential part of preparing for birth.
